Have you ever wondered how corn pollinate's and grows into an ear of corn?
When The corn tassels the silk where the ear of corn grows starts to grow. Each strand of the silk will become a kernel of corn, and an ear of corn will start to grow. The pollination takes about ten days. The pollen grain falls on a sticky strand of silk. Each corn stalk produces just one or two ears of corn.
The pollination takes place from bee's, and a nice breeze is helpful. I like to walk past my corn and give it a little shake to help the pollen grains if there are no bee's and no breeze.
Once the pollination occurs it takes about 20 days to harvest. A long time seasoned farmer once told me that the raccoons will come and pull a stock down to try a piece of corn when it is almost ready. He said that 5 days after the raccoons visit the corn is ready to harvest and you must get it before they do. Each night they come and break a stock peel open the corn take a bite and leave it. I always get mad when I see this. If you are going to steel at least each the whole piece of corn.
We just had a nice thunderstorm with a nice amount of rain, and lightening. Mother natures natural water and fertilizer. The plants just love all of the nitrogen they get from a good thunderstorm.
Living next to the foothills in Northern Colorado is always full of surprises. This was a late spring storm on May 19th this year.
We got a foot of snow. My Raspberry plants are on bottom right of the snow photo. They were completely flattened by all the wet heavy snow. I kept brushing them off, but I was sure that they were done for the season.
With a lot of TLC here they are today. Full of life and loaded with yummy fruit.
The storm was not that kind to the apple trees this year.
